A broken fan motor in your air-conditioner is a common problem that many homeowners face. In fact, it is estimated that a coolant leak can cause up to 50% of an air conditioning system to fail in less than one month. Since cooling and heating are the number one function of an air-conditioning system, having a broken fan motor can mean that your home is not cooled effectively enough to keep you comfortable. When your fan motor fails, it tends to cost quite a bit to replace it. It is important to have this repaired quickly, as without a functioning fan motor your whole air conditioning system can easily be brought down by a failing compressor.

When your fan motor goes bad, there are a few things that you can do to fix it. One option that you can take is to replace the entire air conditioner fan motor. This can be tricky and expensive if you need to have it done professionally because of the complexity of the moving parts. Replacing just the fan itself though can end up saving you money since the parts used to make the new one are very inexpensive.

One alternative that you can consider is replacing just the outdoor condenser unit. The outdoor condenser is responsible for taking the refrigerant that the cold air through the house and converting it to heat. It also takes the Freon that is used to maintain the temperature inside the home and converting it into a liquid that can be dispersed through the air conditioning system's fan motor. If your fan motor fails completely then you might not be able to keep the cold air throughout your home. This is why sometimes replacing just the outdoor condenser unit can save you money. If the fan motor itself is still functioning, then you can replace just the outdoor condenser unit instead.

If both the outdoor condenser and the indoor fan motor fail, then you may need to have both of them replaced at the same time. The good news is that it usually doesn't take a whole lot of work to replace either one of these. In many cases, all you need to do is change the wires associated with the fans and break the old breaker. Most people don't realize that even older home air conditioning systems use a breaker to prevent the motor from accidentally kicking in and start the whole thing over again.

Sometimes the most expensive air conditioning repair option is to replace both the air conditioners motor and the compressor. Because both of these pieces of equipment use Freon to operate, they require different types of cooling. If you have an older model, then you may not be able to easily change out the Freon because it is designed to run off of normal room heat. In order to get rid of the excess heat from the Freon, you will need to find a way to remove the air conditioning compressor from the equation.

This may mean having to open up the entire system. In some cases, changing just the fan motor may be enough to get rid of the problem. If the fan motor is the issue, you are going to need to either get an AC repair professional or have them check the Freon and see if it needs to be changed out. It's always best to save the day so remember to call in an air conditioner professional as soon as possible. Remember, a broken fan motor is never going to fix things.
